Avoiding the Stale, Keepin'it Fresh

I've noticed (again) the tendency that things in your life can become too familiar, too routine, that they lose the magic, the specialness, that made you want to make it a regular part of your life.

This morning, I stopped at my usual Sunday morning coffee shop, The Firefly for a bagel and coffee. This Sunday morning visit has been something I look forward to for quite awhile. However.... Today was the 4th morning in a row I have been there. I almost didn't go, cause it was getting too routine after 4 days in a row.

There is a Chinese buffet near my office I will go to 4 or 5 times a month for lunch. There is Triangle Park, a restaurant that Kathy and I go to almost every Friday night for dinner, etc. These are familiar, comforting routines. However we like to add and subtract from these hangouts. Recently Henry's has been getting more of our money including last night.

Whenever I have the tendency to over indulge, I remember the time when Karen and I were married, having babies and living in Kokomo in a duplex with no lampshades. Raspberry coffee cake became an obsession for us. We had some everyday. We bought more when we ran out and we loved it. It was food for the soul until... one day we opened the box and both looked at each other and the desire was gone.. poof... no more raspberry coffee cake. For me it was about 10 or more years before I had some again.

What is the one thing in your life that used to be special, that became routine, that you developed a dislike for? And are you guarding the special places now, so they will stay special?
